Super Bowl Spartans

Of all the entertainers to play at the Super Bowl, one group from the Tri-State may be familiar. By J. Faller “Oh, the places you’ll go!” – Dr. Seuss A simple pastime of tossing a football in the yard or a tradition of playing in a Turkey Bowl with friends on Thanksgiving Day can be the spark to future gridiron greatness. Through the years, football has taken Roger Bacon Spartans to some of the highest heights and grandest stages the game has to offer. The achievements of legendary Coach Bron Bacevich are well known far and wide. Spartans have taken the field at the collegiate level in the Rose Bowl, and other big games, to include The Game. RB football alumni have played in the NFL as recently as the 1990s and early 2000s. They have also found success north of the border, playing in the Canadian Football League’s championship game, the Grey Cup, and being honored in the CFL Hall of Fame. A few odds and ends from the Florida 1996 trip for those who can't get enough. Yes, you can check out a video from the standstill competition in Al Lang Stadium, with thanks to Jeff Lamb. RB Band 1996 Festival of States Competition Show In addition to the band performance, you'll hear the announcer's introduction cover the distinguished history of the RB Band. The Band Boosters make a strong showing in the stands, to include a well-placed banner. The awards are announced at the end.      3rd Place: Columbia River, WA      2nd Place: Traverse City, MI      1st Place: Stockbridge, GA Setting up on the field to perform at 10:30pm. There's a bit of glare in the photo, but those are clearly large puddles from the rain on the infield. Although the still frame is quite grainy, there's no disputing the enthusiasm from the Boosters that night, as they got prime real estate in the stands to prominently display two signs of support. Flawless in Florida

25 years ago today the Roger Bacon Band took the field for competition in St. Petersburg, Florida at the Festival of States By J. Faller Once upon a time in a land far from Cincinnati a town held a festival. One hundred years ago, in 1921, civic leaders in St. Petersburg, Florida invited many from far and wide to their first official Festival of States. The Suncoasters organized a civic celebration in a format similar to Mardi Gras to showcase their area. There were parades through the city and along the water, day and night throughout the week. Festivity participants included krewes, floats representing cities across Florida, politicians in sport cars and marching and concert bands. Concerts were held around town, in band shells on the waterfront and at local high schools throughout the week.
